Getting married in New York State is a three-step process:

  1. Obtain a marriage license from a municipal clerk
  2. Have a ceremony (it may be religious or secular), at which the officiant and witnesses sign the license
  3. Return the signed marriage license to the municipal clerk.

A couple who intends to be married in New York State must apply in person for a marriage license to any town or city clerk in the state. The application for a license must be signed by both applicants in the presence of the town or city clerk. A representative cannot apply for the license on behalf of the applicant. This applies even if the representative has been given a Power of Attorney. Notarized marriage license affidavits signed by the applicants cannot be substituted for their personal appearance.

  • Persons must be 18 years old.
  • License fee is $40.
  • Certified birth certificate and picture identification required.
  • All previous divorce papers or death certificate of previous spouse are necessary.
  • Licenses are good for 60 days. There is a 24-hour waiting period after the license is issued before the marriage can take place.
  • Marriage License Application

Dog Licenses

Every dog four months of age or older is required by NYS Agriculture & Markets Law to be licensed in the town where it’s harbored. There is an annual fee of $25 for unneutered/unspayed and $15 for neutered/spayed. Current proof of rabies is required along with the Dog License Application.

Pursuant to General Municipal Law §209-cc, everyone who owns, possesses or harbors certain wild animals must report the location of the animal to the Town Clerk on or before April 1st of each year.
